Featured Member: Shondra’s Quick Weaves

You have to see these quick weave hairstyles from Thirsty Roots Member Shondra. She found out how to create these quick and easy weave short hairstyles through some research and a few YouTube videos. In her words “I like the fact that african american hair is so versatile and we can have so many looks.”  Read her interview to find out more about Shondra’s hair care and styling choices.

TR: How long have you had relaxed hair and why do you choose to relax your hair?

I started getting relaxers when I was 10 years old, mainly because I have natural curly hair and I didn’t like it back then. It was easy to change styles and hair more manageable hair. At the moment I have been taking a break from perms and I about to embark on braids soon. That is why I have been making wigs. I am trying to get into natural styles for a while.

TR: What are your choice hairstyles and haircuts?

I had long hair for years but I really like short hair because I am always on the go.  I like styles that are neatly shaved in the back and basically anything thats creative.

TR: How do you maintain your haircut? How often do you need to get it cut?

I usually wrap my hair with a satin scarf at night to keep my hair from breaking. I keep my haircut quite often because I change it so much, unless I am wearing weaves. It just depends on what style I am wearing.  I change my hair weekly though. I also cut my sons hair and maintain my daughters hair too.

TR: We love your wigs and quick weave styles. How did you learn how to create these and how do you style/create them?

Thank you so much. It’s really great that even though I am not a professional, people like my styles. I started doing quick weaves when I decided to stop perming my hair so often. I researched products to use to keep the glue off of my hair and I have been doing quickweaves for about two years now. I watched a few videos on You Tube and that really helped.  I am a risk taker when it comes to styling my hair and it works for me. I just like being different and I am very picky when it comes to my styles. I just started with the wigs last year and I love them. I haven’t had a perm in a long time and wigs are a great way to let your hair rest.

TR: What is your current hair care regimen?

Right now I am not perming my hair so I keep my scalp greased and wear wigs. I really don’t have a regimen although I should. I like to keep things simple and not stress my hair out. I love the Pantene line for african american women. I use that on my daughters hair also because she doesn’t too much of anything in her hair.

TR: What are must-have products and techniques do you use to style your hair?

I must say Mini flat irons are a major necessity. The key main items that I use are Prostyle gel, Wig shine spray(it works great on weaves), Pump it Up spritz, wig caps with the straps in back for adjusting.  My technique is a bit unbelievable because I style my hair sitting on my bathroom counter, holding a mirror with my legs.lol I have been doing that for years because I work from the back to the front.

TR: Are you a professional hair stylist or is styling hair something you like doing in your spare time?

No I am not a professional but I have much respect for the women and men that do have their license. I have always like to be different so it became second nature for styling hair. I used to do finger waves on all of the guys hair in my neighborhood and I have been hooked on hair since then.

TR: What do you love about your hair?

I love my natural curly hair because no matter how many perms I have had, it’s still healthy. I like the fact that african american hair is so versatile and we can have so many looks. My hair is a way that I can express myself and not always look like everyone else. It was also a gift that I got from my Dad.

TR: Anything else you may want to add?

Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of such a great experience. This really gives everyone a chance to show off their talents and make new friends. I really appreciate the blessing.
