  • I started my locs about 6 months ago,and I love my hair! The only challenge that I am faced with at this time is the unruliness of my hair, but I am dealing with it as it comes. Your hair is beautiful and you are a great example of how versatile black hair can be.

  • I’m a 64year female whose locks come just below the shoulders,I’m looking hair styles for my age.

  • Katrena, you don’t necessarily have to chop your hair really short to start. It depends on the method you begin with. If your hair is relaxed and you want to start the “traditional” way of twisting or backcombing or something like that, then I believe that you do have to chop. It still doesn’t have to be really short. I didn’t research any methods that required me to cut my hair off. I like my length & wanted to keep it. There r lots of different methods to starting (I started with braids). Just do some research to find out whats best for you.

  • Katrena,
A great way to start locks withoutcutting your hair really short is to start with extensions. Yarn braids, yarn twists, and two strand twists with extensions are great options. Be sure to tell your stylist you want your hair to lock with the style so that she can part your hair appropriately. Once the style is in place, you will return to your stylist to have your “locks” maintained/palm-rolled. Once your hair has locked and grown out to a length you are comfortable with, the extensions can be cut away to remove relaxed ends. This is a great option for people who want locks but don’t want to wear their hair short.

  • I hv locks and love them. I started mine with just letting the hair bunch up.(just washing no conditioner) pulled hair apart to create individual locks and walla….took about 6 months, and then 1 year to train. My hair was about 5 inches long when I began. Good luck!
