Featured Member: Mac’s Two Year Natural Hair Journey

Check out Thirsty Roots member Mac’s two year natural hair journey and interview. Mac says she has been frustrated at times, but now in her words: “I’ve learned to embrace it, accepting my hair for what it is. I have been blessed by the journey.” Just like Mac has learned, we must realize that our individual textures are unique and there is beauty in each and every one of them.

TR: How long have you been natural and why do you choose to be natural?

MAC: I’ve been natural since June of 2010. I chose to become natural because I was tired of relaxing my hair and not seeing any real quality (length, strength, etc.) with my hair.

TR: Did you transition or did the big chop?

MAC: I chose the big chop in July of 2011.

TR: What were the responses from your family and friends?

MAC: The response with my family and friends was first complete shock because I chose to cut the majority of my hair off however each person was very supportive and embraced my choice. They even help me with styling my hair since I cannot braid or twist.

TR: What is your current hair care regimen?

MAC: I wash and condition my hair one a week shampooing with Raw African Black Soap (purchased from Amazon.com) followed by a conditioner (Shea Moisture Organic Shea Butter Restoration Conditioner). I moisturize with water everyday plus using one of the three (depending on how I feel) Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Reconstructive Elixir Spray, Tresemme Flawless Curls Lotion Crème or Raw Shea Butter

TR: What are your must-have products?

MAC: My must-have products are Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel and Shea Moisture Organic Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I haven’t had a chance to really experiment with other products.

TR: What are your favorite accessories?

MAC: Banana Hair Clips, headbands, Scuni No Slip Grip Evolution Ponytail Holders and Scuni No Slip Grip Evolution Gel Headbands.

TR: What do you like the most about being natural?

MAC: The thickness and versatility of hairstyles I can create/copy from other natural ladies.

TR: Anything else you may want to add?

MAC: My choice in becoming natural has really been a long but positive experience. I’ve had days were I wanted to shave my hair off due to frustration of not achieving a certain look I’ve see or wanted but its taught me is my hair not like many and I’ve learned to embrace it, accepting my hair for what it is. I have been blessed by the journey.

  • Shout outs special ladies in my life Bear and Esha who style and snap my hair transition. I thank God for your constant support and love during my natural hair journey because I KNOW I’ve been driving you two crazy. It is indeed appreciated. XXOO

  • I just recently cut my locs out & my hair is so short I can’t find any styles for my length. I went to a hairdresser with pictures of what I wanted & she said my hair was to short to hold a flat twist. HELP

  • Oh, by the way she put coils in my hair. If my hair can be coiled why not flt twist. Cause I need a style that’ll hold for a week. I went natural so I wouldn’t be tied to a salon every week.
