Being a “ordinary street dude”, as Akintunde Ahmad says it, has lead him on a path to success. Due to his choice of attire and hair in locs, the young Oakland Tech High School teen says he has been “judged and overlooked by his appearance”, but for people who doubt him he keeps a snap of his grades of a 5.0 GPA and 2100 SAT Score.
How did he do this, well Akintunde says:
“My whole life people have been telling me to stay on this path and everything will fall, the cards will fall like the way you want them to.”
Despite the fact that his brother has been shot and witnessing his share of violence of peers as well, Akintude stayed on his path of academic success, in addition, playing three instruments and baseball. Due to his academic excellence and athletic skills he has been accepted to a list of Ivy League schools, including Yale and Brown Universities, of which are his top two to major in pre-med or pre-law.
Stereotyping confuses society.
“When people rely on surface appearances and false racial stereotypes, rather than in-depth knowledge of others at the level of the heart, mind and spirit, their ability to assess and understand people accurately is compromised.”
– James A. Forbes
This type of excellence should be on blast! Thirsty Roots congratulates Akintunde for his great achievements!
