If you have been struggling to get the perfect shiny twist outs with defined crimps and curls, then follow these simple steps and you will achieve that look you desire.
Before The Twisting Process for Shiny Twist Outs
Optimum results for the perfect twist outs is to start with clean, conditioned, and detangled hair. By shampooing and conditioning the hair before styling, your hair will be prepped for proper absorption of the products for setting and a refined finish. Getting rid of any build-up in the hair will prevent limp weighed down hair. Also, too many products overlapping each other can cause flakes and frizz.
Some helpful tools and products you need:
- Clips – to separate hair
- Wide tooth comb or detangle brush – to keep each section detangled
- Rattail comb – to help with parting
- Water bottle or leave-in spray – for moisture
- Shea butter – to seal and set style
- Styling gel – to hold the style in place
- Hair Oil – to seal and add shine
After cleansing and conditioning, separate your hair into 4 sections: 2 in the front, 2 in the back.
Now you can begin twisting.
Step 1: MoisturizeStart with one of your 4 sections and depending on the thickness of your hair, divide it into small sections about 2 inches wide (usually no more than 4 small sections). Take that small section and spritz with water or a light leave-in to moisturize the hair for soft results. |
|
Step 2: Add Styling ProductAdd a styling product such as shea butter and a little bit of styling gel on top of the shea butter. You can also use your choice of twisting product. The key is to make sure the product you choose is thick in consistency and not too watery or light. |
|
Step 3: Add OilAdd oil such as Thirsty Roots Apricot Castor Oil to seal in the moisture and provide lasting shine. You only need a couple drops of this oil; a little goes a long way. |
|
Step 4: Tightly Twist the HairSplit the small 2 inch section into two strands and begin twisting. The best way to two strand twists the hair for optimum results, is to take your thumb and index finger and roll the hair as you twist the two strands one over the other. |
*** Repeat these steps until all the hair is twisted. Make sure you allow the hair to dry completely before unraveling the twists.
Thank you so much for caring to share these how-tos with everyone. I grew up with my mom plaiting my hair when I was a kid and graduated to press & curl and relaxers. When my scalp got stuck in the telogen phase I lost all hope. Going natural helped me emotionally but I had no idea of what to do other than a 70s ‘Fro. I ended up in wigs but wanted more, much more. And now that I have found ThirstyRoots.com, I am ready to conquer the world! And thanks for the ‘Over 50s’ styles. You’re a God- send!
