French Braid Hairstyles

There certainly seems to be plenty of French braid hairstyles.  Perhaps this is because the French braid is one of the most basic techniques of hair styling.  In fact, it may be related to the first type of hairstyling that was used in ancient civilizations.  Evidence suggests that tight braiding, like cornrows, were used in tribal communities as early as 500 B.C. and in such diverse regions as Nigeria, Egypt, and Africa.  This evidence can be found in hieroglyphs and sculptures, the most famous of which being the Sphinx in Egypt.

These early traditions were very meaningful.  Some studies suggest that these tribal communities actually used hairstyling as a way to distinguish themselves from one another.  Particular designs or accessories may be determined simply by the region in which you might live.  For this reason it was also common to find beads and shells braided into hair too.

Obviously, these early styles are still celebrated today, in all their forms.  For some, the simple braiding is enough because it is a practical way to keep hair back and out of the eyes.  For others, though, especially those of African descent, elaborate braiding is a way to keep in touch with a deeply rooted culture and history.’

If you are not familiar with any of these styles of hair and you want to learn, there are a few different ways that you could try.  First of all, you could read a beauty book or styling book which explains it all in detail.  This is one of the oldest ways to learn and it might also be one of the most inefficient.  It is not only difficult to learn on your own without instructions, but these written or printed instructions are also quite simply impractical.

Secondly, you could take a course at a local community college or beauty school.  This is a much more effective alternative than studying on your own.  The big downside to this, of course, is that it can be quite costly and you still have to operate on the schedule of the school and not your own.

For this reason, you should also consider using online webinars and videos to learn how to braid.  These instructional videos are typically very easy to find and even easier to follow.  They also provide you the opportunity to learn from the comfort of your own home and on your own time.  You can also move at whatever speed is best for you.
